When setting an icon for a folder, often you just want to add an overlay. For example you want a folder for all your company‘s stuff and you set the folder icon to the company‘s logo. But then you no longer recognize it as folder. Of course you see that it is surrounded by folders but it self is no longer recognizable as folder. You have image previews for pictures in folders. I hope this routine is adaptable to overlay a custom icon over a folder without actually changing the folder icon.
