Often you have a directory in a remote location or somewhere where you cannot put a symlink to and place it in a folder. Since this link is always created as .desktop file it will be sorted into the folder‘s files. It should be possible to treaat folders linking to a folder being sorted as folder.
I know this would require inspecting .desktop files in that folder but I hope this is possible anyway. So the “Mom‘s share” (smb://momspc/share) folder is sorted next to the “Local share” (~/share).
