Version:           2.0.1 (using KDE 4.5.90) 
OS:                Linux

On a system using GNOME as the desktop environment, but with
KDE applications such as k3b installed.

When one inserts a blank DVD-R, a popup appears that

  "You have just inserted a blank DVD. Choose what
  application to launch.

  Select...

  [Open CD/DVD Creator]"

k3b is missing.

k3b is installed on this system, and when invoked manually it
works just fine.
According to a GNOME dev, this is because the k3b desktop file misses the following mimetypes:
x-content/blank-cd;x-content/blank-dvd;x-content/blank-bd;x-content/blank-hddvd;

Those are valid MIME types by Freedesktop shared-mime-info (/usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml). K3B knows how to handle them... so it's pretty clear they must be added (MimeType desktop entry is just to inform you are able to handle it, no default app or anything is supposed).
