Description Evan Teran 2010-12-23 23:17:11 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.4)
OS: Linux

I have a file which has important information in it. So I have chosen to encrypt it with something like: "gpg -c info.txt", which will create an info.txt.gpg.

In order to read it again, I can open it with kgpg, it will prompt for my password and all goes well, but this just creates an info.txt file again, which I can read, almost certainly want to delete shortly after I am done with it.

It would be really nice if there were a feature to view an encrypted file but without a file being created on disk. It seems that you may be able to create a pipe and utilize something like this under the hood to implement it:

"gpg -o some_pipe info.txt.gpg"

Reproducible: Didn't try

I have noticed the "View File Decrypted" feature, which seems like it is just about what I want, but I have not been able to get it to work with symmetrically encrypted files.

"kgpg -s encrypted.gpg" should do the trick. Can you please verify if that works for you?
Comment 3 Evan Teran 2010-12-25 21:35:11 UTC
That command seems to assume I want to decrypt using my private gpg key. The file in my example was encrypted using symmetric (password) encryption. So unfortunately, this doesn't work for me.

i have a problem with kgpg decrypting files.

kgpg -s file_encrypted opens an empty editor without ask for a passphrase

if i write some text in the editor, crypt it and press decrypt button, got an
empty editor.

this with kgpg 4.5.5 and 4.6.0.

Luca.

Luca, your problem is likely something different. Can both of you please retry using at least version 4.8.1 and see if those problems are resolved? If not, please also say which GnuPG version you are using.

In order to view a decrypted file, I load it encrypted and press the Decrypt button in the text viewer window.

Does this work meanwhile?
