Clicking on the tray icon causes the kmix window to restore rather than showing the usual volume slider.

Reproducible: Always

Confirmed on Gentoo, x86_64, still present in 4.5.85  (Beta2). 

The setting regarding this doesn't seem to have any effect. 
I already tried with empty settings, doesn't work as well.

Another confirmation, regression started at 4.5.80.

Same here with 4.5.85 (and previously 4.5.80) under Archlinux (kde-unstable repo)
