Version:           2.3.0 (using KDE 4.4.0) 
OS:                Linux

It seems like it is in pause mode, but the play button changes so it apparently is playing.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. I make a playlist
2. I stop a song 
3. I play it again
4. I stop another song

The same happens when the playlist gets to its final song, when that song ends it just doesn't play anything, 

Actual Results:  
Stops playing songs. It stays at the beginning of the song but it doesn't play anything.

Expected Results:  
Keep playing songs

I can't reproduce this here at all, using the phonon-vlc-backend. It also works with the phonon-xine-backend. Using Amarok 2.4-git with KDE 4.5.3 on Kubuntu 10.10.
You should upgrade to the latest sable release which is Amarok 2.3.2
