When running 'alsamixer' noticed that it's error report mentions 'PCM is not a string' error in .asoundrc. Removing .asoundrc corrected this error: the phonon configurator now runs Ok, also Kmix shows all channels so that master can be 'unsilenced'. Sound works after this. Looks like you had some leftover configuration from 10.04. Since the transition from 10.04 to 10.10 should go smoothly, you should report this as a bug in Launchpad, this is really distribution specific.
