Version:           4.5 (using KDE 4.5.2) 
OS:                Linux

OpenSuse 11.3. running, connect cradle and insert Handspring Visor. All seems fine. I hit the Sync-button, Visor Edge reports a "Fatal Exception" which requires a hardware reset of the handspring. 

In OpenSuse 10.3 it works fine. Hit the sync button and open kpilot, voila.

I reported the bug on OpenSuse Bugzilla already, but was guided here ;-)

Steps to Reproduce:
1.connect cradle
2.Insert Visor
3.sync


Actual Results:  
Fatal Error of the palm

Expected Results:  
Sync

After the Fatal Error, the data was still there.

Can you give the link where they tell you to report a KPilot bug? openSUSE 11.3 does not ship kpilot (it is unmaintained), so you need to look for a replacement program.

Sure, kpilot does not ship. However, in my opinion,  the pilot should not get fried when connected. And one could always try install some old kpilot version.

As stated on the Suse list, just in case it helps: I would offer to borrow a handspring for the duration of fixing this issue. Borrow: free of charge. However, the handspring is the german version.

It isn't really clear from the bug report if you have KPilot installed or not.

As I understand the bug report, you are just plugging the device, hit a button on it, and it gets corrupted, possibly by some HAL or udev daemon. If that's the case, the bug report is unrelated to KDE and you should clarify that in the upstream bug report.

If you have an old version of KPilot installed, and the corruption only occurs after KPilot is running, then it probably is a KPilot problem, but the KPilot developers don't recommend running it. In other words, remove it and look for a replacement.

Sorry, my bad, I was not specific enough.

Kpilot is not running: I just plug in the device and press the "sync" button on the device.
 
Therefore, unrelated to KDE. I should go elsewhere. Not sure where, though.

I would suggest a forum first. For example, http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/hardware/442357-udev-opensuse-11-3-a.html has some information about udev entries for Palm devices.

In either case, please state in the downstream bug report that you were not running kpilot. You could try if the problem also happens in a GNOME session, or even in a console-only session (runlevel 3). If it does, it would clearly be a kernel or udev bug.
