Description j.artu 2010-09-14 12:28:38 UTC
Version: 0.6 (using KDE 4.5.1)
OS: Linux

Hi,

Could you add an option in the preferences to disable the opensearch suggestions in the "awesome bar" introcuced in rekonq 0.6.
I have a slow internet with a high ping and every time I type something in the url bar I have to wait from 5 to 10 seconds to get a result.
There's also less proposal from history and bookmark than before, for example if I type kde, I get only 3 results (1 from bookmark and 2 from history) and five results from the suggestions !!
From my point of view this sugestions are useless because my brain already take care of picking the good words when I'm looking for something :p

So, please make it optionnal :)
BTW thanks for your work in rekonq, it's getting better with every release :)

Reproducible: Always

This option should contain only online suggestions.
The suggestions that come from bookmarks should still be shown, imho.

I would prefer if the suggestion widget pops up before it got the google suggestions and add them later, so that people with a small internet connection speed can see all other suggestions immediately.

Thanks for your answers, it was something missing in rekonq developement (dialog between users and devs), and that really broke my motivation to report bugs/features request :/

After this sidenote :p Yes, Furkan it's what I'm talking about, it's not about results coming from history or bookmarks, those ones are fine.
I'm talking about the suggestions when you use google search engine as default for example, after history and bookmarks results there's 4 results coming from google's suggestions (or auto-completion, I don't how you call this) and I want this to be optional, because I don't care, as I said when I'm looking for something, I know what to type.
So I would like this to be optional, as Felix pointed, there's still people (like me) with slow internet connection or even small quotas around the world :(

Thanks !

I guess it's not necessary to make it optional with Felix's solution.

Sorry, but english is not my native language and I'm not sure I clearly understand what he said : "I would prefer if the suggestion widget pops up before it got the google
suggestions and add them later". He means a kind of delay where history and bookmarks are shown first and online suggestions don't slow down the results display ?

If you want an example of how I would like to see the url bar tweakable (not sure this word exist ^^), install omnibar plugin for firefox and look at the available settings, here the suggestions from search engines are optional and others settings gives a great control on results, because even if it's another subject the rekonq urlbar's results are really limited right now and I spend my time typing full adress by hand, which is not the case with other webbrowsers ;)

He means that the suggestions that are not got online should be shown first then when the online suggestions available they should be added.

It is sure that "online suggestions" will NOT popped up in a second moment. This because we (me and Lionel) tried to implement it and see this solution "flash" the suggestions, changing the list to be long-short-long-short-long-short... every time user press a button.
Anyway, I have not clear in mind the problem: isn't the solution here just to disable the "default search engine" via the webshortcuts dialog, setting it to "none"?
This way you will have NO online suggestions, but the ability to search anyway the net via the webshortcuts activated.

@Andrea

Yes I know I can disable "default search engine" but for me it's a workaround because its not the expected behaviour (and the default in any others browers) to have to type a keyword before a search.

This what I expect :
1) I have a default search engine and when what I type something and type enter it makes a search (like in any webbrowser), without the need of a webshortcut.
2) If "online suggestions" is enable, it shouldn't slow down the display of bookmark and history. Bookmark and history should appears instantly, same if I want to type a word to make a search on default I shouldn't have to wait 5sec to see the urlbar pop-up and to be able to type enter.
3) I should be able to disable "online suggestions" without disabling default search engine, if I don't care about this feature which from my point of view (but maybe I'm the only one^^) is useless, as I sad when I look for something I'm able to pick the right word to find something from my own.

I also notice that I don't have a delay with result display with online suggestions from chromium or firefox+omnibar plugins, and in both there's a settings to enable/disable online suggestions.

And again maybe with a high speed link you don't see the problem, I don't know, but here with my slow connection, sometimes it's really frustrating to use rekonq and it's a useless overhead too (even if probably small), as I have a quota too.

No for the technical codind part, I don't know. But I think that you and the others developers have the knowledge and the skills to a least, find a way to prevent the online suggestions from "stuckin" the whole display of urlbar, meaning bookmark and history shoul be priority.
And I don't really understand where's the problem to add a checkbox to enable/disable online suggestions in the settings anyway.

Thanks !

I think you'll find this fixed in 0.9
