As mentioned in the title I was trying to upgrade to KDE 4.5 using Kubuntu packages. I added the PPA, okayed the refresh of repositories (which ended well or at least KpackageKit said so) and then clicked on the "software update" button. I have an Italian KDE so I don't know the exact English label but I think you got it (the green shield anyway). KpackageKit started to look for updates but never progressed. I pressed cancel and after a few moments KpackageKit crashed.  This happended twice. Third time it worked (if it doesn't crash after I send this). This is similar to some errors I saw in the duplicate list but IMHO there's no exact match. Hope this helps.
