In KDE3.x Alt+Tab and Alt+Shift+Tab were preassigned to moving forward and backward through windows whereas Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab were preassigned to moving forward or backward through desktops. In KDE4 the latter key combinations didn't work. Fortunately the keys could be assigned in the system configuration module. Unfortunately this didn't work 100 percent. Moving forward works fine but hitting Ctrl+Shift+Tab didn't cause any action.

Doing some research I found out that in order to move backward through windows the combination Alt+Shift+Backtab had been preassigned. I couldn't enter this through the keyboard because there is no such key "Backtab" on mine. Doing some more research on the net I found the hint to edit ~/.kde/share/config/kglobalshortcutsrc to assign keys manually. So I edited this file changing Alt+Shift+Tab to Alt+Shift+Backtab and restarted KDE. Nothing happened. Having a closer look at the configuration file I saw that my changed version had been overwritten by the original one. Eventually I edited the file again made it write protected. Now I can move through desktops using the well known key combination. But I doubt if I can assign more keys through system settings now.

Expected Results:  
1. Entering Alt+Shift+Tab through system settings and being able to use it afterwards.

2. changes to ~/.kde/share/config/kglobalshortcutsrc should be persistent

I'm using kde 4.4.5 from ubuntu ppa repositories now. But I think I had the same problem running 4.4.4.
