Description Martin Steigerwald 2010-06-09 09:40:18 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.3)
OS: Linux

This is with KDE 4.4.4 thats not yet selectable in the KDE Version drop down. But applies for KDE 4.3 as well and is a suggestion for future changes.

I am using activities to group applications and plasmoids regarding topics together. Right now I have to use per virtual desktop activities which up to kDE 4.4.4 are quite error prone and difficult to setup - I can provide a list of concrete bug reports if desired. For example I need to configure virtual desktops *and* activities and keep those configurations in sync. Like for example virtual desktop and activity names. Additionally currently, upto KDE 4.4.4, this mapping occasionally gets lost (bug #232172).

Using just plasma activities doesn't give me what I want, cause switching an activity just switches the plasmoids on the dashboard.

Thus when I for example have four topics like

- Information for web browsing, weather plasmoids, rss reader
- Documents for Dolphin, file management, KOffice / OpenOffice.org or any document viewers
- Communication for Kontact, Kopete and social plasmoids
- System administration for Konsole and system status related plasmoids

just switching the plasmoids on the dashboard would leave me with communication based plasmoids but system admin applications and such like.

Expected results:

An option to seamlessly integrate activities with virtual desktop management with one central place to configure.

Reproducible: Didn't try

I agree !

this is precisely where the work has gone for 4.5; there will still be work to do on it in 4.6, but the destination is as described. it's a work in progress, but it's the design goal (and has been for a good while) and you can now associate windows and widgets with activities. more to come of course :)

Good to know, thanks for the work :)

Thanks, Aaron. Good to know. Time to dig out some KDE 4.5 Live CD ISO to look at the progress.
