The ussername field is always empty no matter if kdm is sett to remember it or not

I cannot confirm this to be fixed in 4.4.90-0ubuntu1~lucid1~ppa6 (Kubuntu beta packages).

It's not fixed for me either. It seems like kdm is not using the configuration-file correctly. Has the configuration format changed ?

Well, setting the preselected user to a fixed user works. So the configuration file is indeed read, but "previous user" is missed.

Where is the previous username stored ?

This is still an issue in 4.5.0 - unless it is a packaging-issue.

I guess it's the following error (taken from /var/log/error.log):

Jul 29 18:17:58 faramir-linux kdm_greet[6448]: Data directory "/var/lib/kdm" not accessible: No such file or directory

You're right Philipp. Changing owner to "kdm" fixes it. Nice catch. So it's a packaging problem. Please close the bug. Launchpad bug is here : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase-workspace/+bug/617815
