Advanced auto detection and input validation would be very useful in the smtp/imap/pop config dialogs.

Ideally a user should just have to put in their user, pass, and server. Then click "Test Settings" which will:
1) perform auto detection of advanced (port, encryption, authentication) settings IF not manually set by the suer
2) do a test login with the user's credentials
3) Report back if everything went well or if not

Usability++

Reproducible: Didn't try

Thunderbird does this very smoothely and even determines the servers of common ISPs when given the email address only. That's awesome and I would love to see it in KMail as well.

This usability improvement is going to take quite some work.
I would say that it has high priority, though, because (1) this is a considerable drawback compared to Thunderbird and (2) setup procedures are crucial to new users, deciding whether they stick with KMail or install Thunderbird.
