Description dg1727 2010-05-06 14:09:59 UTC
Version:            (using KDE 4.4.1)
Compiler:          MSVC
OS:                MS Windows
Installed from:    MS Windows

1. Vista Home Premium SP2 with current automatic updates from Microsoft. No existing KDE install.
2. I installed Maxima 5.21.1 from sourceforge.net. The included version of wxmaxima seems to work OK.
3. I installed the kdeedu package from winkde.org. To do this, I made the following selections in kdewin-installer-gui-0.9.6-5:

    * "Install from Internet"
    * Leave the install directory at the default "C:\Program Files\KDE"
    * Install mode "End User;" compiler set to MSVC
    * release "stable 4.4.1"
    * kdeedu was the only package I downloaded. Of course, the dependencies were automatically downloaded also.

4. At this point, Cantor had been automatically installed, so the next step was to run it.
5.  Settings > Configure Cantor... > Maxima
6. In the "Path to Maxima" field, I have entered "c:/Program Files/Maxima-5.21.1/bin/maxima". The same problem occurs whether I include the quotes or not.
7.  Settings > Configure Cantor... > General
8. In the "Default Backend" field, I have entered "Maxima" (without the quotes), just in case that would help.
9. Problem: In the "Choose the Backend to use:" window, Maxima is never listed in the left-hand list.
10. If, in the main Cantor window, I open the "118536-curve_sketching_maxima.cws" example file, a message box appears which says, "There are some problems with the Maxima backend, please check your configuration or install the needed packages. You will only be able to view this worksheet."
11. The same problem happens whether I use Vista's "Run as administrator" on Cantor or not.

WIndows Vista is very old and currently Cantor doesn't support it. We are working to support more recent versions of Windows.
