This file is invalid. Use last digiKam 1.2.0 instead an old beta release as 1.0.0-beta5 Gilles Caulier thanks for the message!
you are right, it would be preferable to install fresh software v 1.2+;
unfortunately, ubuntu 9.10 does offer digikam only 1.0.0.-beta5.
ubuntu is just 2 days "old", it's too risky to install right now.
