When hovering over the kmix tray icon, a popup appears indicating the volume level. But since KDE4.4, this popup disappears after a few seconds, leaving no visual feedback when using the mouse wheel to change the volume.

That's a feature, not a bug. It is there far all kind of tray icons, like Trashcan, Amarok, KFilebox, ...

In this case, it seems to me that it's not a feature at all. I agree with you that it is a nice feature for most of the tray icons, but when one is _changing
 the volume_ using the mouse wheel on the kmix icon, one would expect to see the level he's setting the volume to. The fact that this information disappears seems like a bug, IMHO.
