Description hadmut 2010-04-09 21:12:13 UTC
Version: 1.1 (using KDE 4.4.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Under Settings - configure digiKam - Templates you can enter templates which are supposed to fill the XMP and IPTC tags (see the note at the bottom of the template dialog).

But actually there is no way to have that values copied into the XMP and IPTC tags. In the side menu under Caption/Tags, Information Tab, there is a selector to copy a template into these fields, but these values are kept in the digikam database. There is no way to have them filled into XMP or IPTC tags.

Maybe some bottons/selectors forgotten in the user interface?

Have you checked the relevant option the Metadata page in setup?
Comment 2 hadmut 2010-04-11 16:45:18 UTC
Can you be more precise about which options are "relevant"?

The options page for entering templates says that the templates are supposed to fill IPTC and XMP. It is not obvious that any of these options have to be checked for these templates to work.

"Save metadata templates as metadata embedded in files"

Wording has room for improvement but it talks about templates.

That option does not even exist under digikam 1.0 (Ubuntu 9.10), at least not under that name.

It exists under digikam 1.1 (Ubuntu 10.04 beta), and yes, it then copies the template to IPTC and XMP. :-)

What exactly is the use of templates if the need to be enabled separately and are not? Isn't that option redundant?

Should the Captions copied as well to any of the IPTC/XMP entries?

Update to last stable digiKam 1.2.0, check the right option at the
right place, and... try again...

Maybe I dont want to write to my pictures at all, only to the database? For each action really writing to the picture, we have a corresponding option to enable or disable it. (For my part, I have most of them disabled currently for example)
