Image experts recommend a sharpening workflow where the last stage of sharpening, "output sharpening" is performed last using the final image resolution. The advantages are obvious as different sharpening settings are needed for different resolutions and different output devices. This means that "master images" are stored without output sharpening (i.e., with only necessary capture and possibly creative sharpening), and the final output sharpening is performed when the output device is known and the image has been scaled to its final resolution.

Digikam's slide show can be used to display the images to an audience. It would be nice if slide show would optionally run a sharpening pass to the displayed images, and Digikam's preferences would allow user to enable sharpening and enter necessary settings (amount, radius and threshold for unsharp mask). My guess is that this would be relatively easy to implement.

Already some web album generators allow output sharpening for web albums (JAlbum, for example). In my experience this produces superior results, as any sharpening performed on the original large image a) depends on whether the image is going to be printed or displayed on screen and b) sharpening done on the original resolution is often lost when the image is scaled down to screen resolution.
