Compiler:          gcc 4.4.1

Installed from:    Mandriva RPMs

I'm using Mandriva Linux 2010.0 i586 and compiled from sources Amarok 2.3. All required and optional development packages were installed and Amarok compiled with all features included. At every start Amarok displays the following message:
"Phonon claims it cannot play MP3 files. You may want to examine the installation of the backend that phonon uses. You may find useful information in the FAQ section of the Amarok Handbook".
Despite that, everything is played correctly, without any messages and/or errors.
Previously used version of Amarok 2.2.2 was installed from Mandriva's rpm repository and haven't this problem.

Distribution used Phonon version 4.3.50-18.4mdv2010.0.
As backend used phonon-gstreamer version 4.3.50-18.4mdv2010.0.

I can confirm this behaviour (Mandriva 2010.0, KDE 4.2.2, Amarok 2.3, Phonon backend gestreamer) - no such message with xine backend (but no sound, too ;-)).

Confirmed for OpenSUSE 11.2 with KDE 4.4.x Factory packages and Gstreamer from Packman. Like Cyril Brosch, no such issues with the Xine backend (from which I switched due to lackluster FLAC support).

I had the same error.
It may have been an "initially not configured" error. When I explicitly checked the gstreamer backend everything worked. It was configured to use the xine backend and the gstreamer bindings for phonon/xine weren't (aren't) installed.

Confirmed on Arch Linux, KDEmod 4.4.3 and amarok 2.3.0 from Extra repo.
Xine works fine. All available Gstreamer packages are installed (bad, ugly, etc.) and I get that message.
