Description George Baltz 2010-03-25 00:40:19 UTC
Application that crashed: amarok
Version of the application: 2.3-GIT
KDE Version: 4.3.5 (KDE 4.3.5) "release 0"
Qt Version: 4.5.3
Operating System: Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop x86_64
Distribution: "openSUSE 11.2 (x86_64)"

What I was doing when the application crashed:
Reproducing bug #228219 on GIT-2.3 (as of 2010-03-22/23?)

Happens when I hit the close button on a USB collection (MSC), probably while it is still scanning.

What do you mean by "close button"? Eject perhaps? And is that inside of amarok or in the connected device applet on plasma-desktop?

I guess I mean the eject button - the one that shows up when you mouse over
the collection header in the 'Local Sources' list.

I usually hit this one >before< I use the desktop one to flush/unmount the
device.

Can somebody reproduce this with Amarok 2.4 beta or 2.4-git? It doesn't crash here at all, using current git version (could also be related to bug 259849 in my case)

On my up-to-date 2.4 GIT version, the bug is still open. It happens when I eject a media with "use in collection" uncheck and until the media is not completely scan (tracks appear in the browser).

New crash information added by DrKonqi

amarok (2.4.0) on KDE Platform 4.6.2 (4.6.2) using Qt 4.7.2

- What I was doing when the application crashed:

Un-plugged my portable media player before Amarok finished scanning files on it (i.e. un-plugged a few seconds after it was plugged in).

I have looked into it a bit and there are different places where the crash happens although one is far more common. I attach a patch with a preliminary fix. From experience it now crashes 20% of the time when unplugging once scanning. There might be a drawback to the patch as Amarok crashed once when unpluggin the device long after it had been scanned.

Patch partially fixing the problem
Comment 24 Myriam Schweingruber 2011-05-12 21:07:10 UTC
Matthieu, thank you for your patch, but please submit it to review board, the same way you did with your last one. Patches need to be submitted that way, not in a bug report.

I would not close the bug quite yet. As I explained it fixes most of the crashes but there are still some remaining although harder to fix as they happen less often.

We have a similar problem with the Sanza Fuze bug 275918.

The USB device is removed while the scanning is still in progress.
As the scanner cannot be aborted and the USB collection does have no say in being deleted there is currently no way to fix those problems fast.

New crash information added by DrKonqi

amarok (2.4.0) on KDE Platform 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6" using Qt 4.7.1

- What I was doing when the application crashed:
I was ejecting the removable USB drive using the mini eject icon within Amarok before Amarok had finished scanning the device for mp3s. This crash behavior is repeatable. If you click eject after the mp3s are scanned it doesn't crash but clicking it while it's, presumedly, scanning will cause a crash.
