there used to be the contact (sender) photo in the message header.
I can no longer see that.

I second this. I am on Mandriva 2010.0, KDE 4.4.0, Kontact 4.4, Kmail 1.13.0. A KDEPim developer in KDEPim-users list previously noted that this feature was intact in Suse, therefore it may be a distribution-specific problem.

Currently, I cannot see any sender picture at the header section of the e-mail preview pane, although the picture of the sender can be seen in kaddressbook.
