When editing a photo there are two save options: Overwrite or Cancel. There should be a third option: "Save As New File"

With next 2.0.0, digiKam introduce Versionning Support. 

There are new option below :

File->Save As New Version->Save New Version As...
                         ->Save in Format->JPEG
                                         ->TIFF
                                         ->PNG
                                         ->PGF
                                         ->JPEG 2000
