What I was doing when the application crashed:
Opening any M4V (h.264) file created in Handbrake in either Xine, Kaffeine or Dragon instantly crashes the app. Interestingly, h264 files created with ffmpeg/x264 open & play OK.

The crash is deep inside the Xine library.
Please, report this to the Xine developers directly (http://bugs.xine-project.org/) and you could try to provide the "faulty" video file so they can test the library against it.
