My preference in KDE is to make sure all of my system tray icons are visible. When I set this I'm happy with the tray, but the expand button continues to pop up, and clicking it actually shrinks the tray slightly to accomodate the already visible icons. I'd expect this expand button to never show in this situation.

This should be easy to reproduce, just set all of your system tray icons to not hide.
