An overlay (like the selection or rotate buttons in thumbnail view) would be more discoverable. However, we'd need some configuration to limit the number of overlays. No, not another overlay! The user should not have to manoeuvre around overlays to click the photo. The mouse has an unused button that has precedent for deleting things in other common software (web browser close tab). For me the middle click means "paste" ;-) As I agree with Gilles not have another overlay I found the middle mouse button also not good. This button is often a combined scoll wheel/button. Image you scroll/zoom your images with scroll wheel and accidentally click on the wheel. Closing a tab does not matter that much than loosing you images. Right now Digikam has two modes: Viewing and Editing. It seems to me that there actually needs to be a third mode, Organizing, which would have less emphasis on things like zooming and panning but would have more emphasis on tagging, deleting, grouping (see bug #121310), filing into albums, and making little touchups like redeye removal. I'll take that idea over to the mailing list, as it pertains to this issue but is much more general. Middle click is very dangerous especially to delete file. We will never implement a new icon-view overlay to delete file. I never seen this feature in other desktop.
