For me this happens after upgrading to KDE-4.5. Each time I log in, effects are disabled (suspended really) and I have to go to System Settings to resume them. If I restart Kwin from the console I get this message: OpenGL compositing self-check failed, disabling compositing. And indeed, if I go to System Settings and check the "Disable functionality checks" box, then I can log in with effects working. I have an Intel G45 based desktop: Mesa DRI Intel(R) G45/G43 GEM 20100328 2010Q1 x86/MMX/SSE2 2.1 Mesa 7.8.2 Detected driver "intel" , version "20100328" Running updated Archlinux, with kernel 2.6.35.1. Same issue for me. Since I use KDE SC4.5.x, I have to go to the control panel in order to "Resume Kwin Effects". And so the behaviour is each time the same : 1. Kwin notify me that it is unable to resume desktop effects. 2. After a second try, a black screen appears and so the effects are resumed. I have to repeat this each time I'm logging in to KDE SC4.5.x For convenience you can go to system settings > Desktop effects > Advanced and check the box where it says "disable functionality checks". this should hopefully go away with mesa >= 7.9rc2 Yes, I have upgraded to mesa 7.9 and the problem is fixed. Thanks. Bulk change: move all KWin kcm bugs to product kwin |
