Description Stéphane Magnenat 2010-02-12 23:06:11 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.4.0)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

As far as I have noticed and understood, in KDE 4.X (including 4.4), detailed file informations (for instance title,bit-rate in an audio file or resolution in a video file) are extracted using Nepomuk and only shown for indexed files. From the user point of view, this is a sad regression from 3.X because it removes the file information feature from all non-indexed files. One would not want to index all removable media, but seeing information of multimedia files is useful.

I guess that it might be possible for dolphin to use part of the Nepomuk framework to extract and display these informations, even if the file is not indexed or if Nepomuk storage is not running. While Nepomuk is nice in theory and on the long run, in practice currently it is a cause of feature regression (and, on Ubuntu, of setup difficulties), which is sad for the end-user experience.

Thanks for the report! This is more or less the same issue as bug 193592.

@Stéphane: I've marked it as duplicate of bug 193592. Don't be afraid about the different subject and the long discussions there, just trust me that your issue will be fixed if bug 193592 gets fixed ;-)
