this is so you can see my folder view setup, in case it matters
Just a bit more info: the files I was being sent over Kopete were MP3 files. Now that I've lived with this bug for a bit, I can confirm that it's not just files received from Kopete that cause this bug, but any file moved to the Desktop folder. So reproducing it is as simple as opening Dolphin and copying a file to your Desktop folder. I also want to confirm that this is still an issue in the final version of KDE SC 4.4. I think i'm experiencing the same bug and this also happens, if you remove or rename a file in the Desktop-folder in a shell. (Renaming a file via the context menu also triggers this bug.) As result all Icons are ordered by name and aligned on the left side of the Desktop. This is not happening with KDE SC 4.3. so it looks like a regression to me.
