when the systems has 2 r/w drives installed and one of them is being used for to, lets say play mp3 files on amarok and you try to burn a dvd on the other drive k3b will, for starters freeze the playing of music even when that drive wasnt selected for burning, and abort the burning operation with a

1)OPC Failed. Try writing speed 1x and
2)Fatal Error at start up:inpout/output error.

There's another bug also involving 2 burners that will force you to remove the media from one of the drives when theres recordable media in both recorders, otherwise k3b wont let you select the second burner in the burning dialog box.

Please also open a new report for the second issue, it has probably nothing to do with the first one.

here is the debugging output. The Bug can be reproduced, excepting that  
this time the error messages were

1)OPC Faled. Please try writing speed 1x
2)growisofs crashed

Notice that the cd in the samsung drive is not an audio cd but a data cd  
(with mp3 files on it)

Today i tried to burn (in multisession mode) data onto the same dvd. The  
other r-w drive still had the media but it wasnt being used by amarok or  
any other program and the result was the same. Here is the debugging

After that I removed the media in the cd r/w drive and the outcome was  
different. It failed to burn the dvd but it complained abvout it not being  
able to record at speeds higher than 4x then that there was some problem  
with the media. This is the debug output

fwiw  I tried again with the same dvd and no media in the other r/w drive,  
only that i selected writing mode to growisofs instead of Auto, writing  
speed 4x instead of Auto (even when both the reorder and the media support  
higher writing speeds), and it just did do. I know that you're going to  
say that that's another problem but k3b since v1.6x has been having  
trouble with selecting the writing method. If you leave it to Auto it will  
just fail when you're trying to burn a dvd.

In an attempt to clean up old bugs that are not valid for K3b 2.0 (=KDE SC 4.x port) anymore, this is now being marked as UNMAINTAINED.
If this bug is still valid for 2.0, please reopen it.

isn't 1.91.0 a beta version of 2.0? the problem is still there on 1.91.0 :(.  Shouldn't a bug like this (selecting which drive one wants to burn stuff on to is a pretty basic feature for a burning utility) be addressed first thing? at least to avoid building new versions on shaky legs?

Yes it is. So I'm reopening this bug. But it seems it isn't k3b bug at all, most likely a wodim issue

today I tried the same operation on Kubuntu and k3b let me select which  
burner I wanted to use for the project. What is the issue with wodim  
exactly? Is there a workaround for it? I'll try it later on sabayon and  
eventually FreeBSD and let you know how did it work out.

I'm not exectly sure what the actual problem is. As for workaround: you can use different backend to burn DVD. To do that:
1. Go to k3b settings "Advanced" -> check "Show advanced GUI elements"
2. In burning window choose "growisofs" in "Writing app:" combobox
See if it'll work that way

sadly that will just not do. I've been selecting growisofs as the writing  
application all along since the Auto mode will not work on Kubuntu. k3b  
always tried to use cdrecord as the burning application even when the  
media in the selected recorder was a dvd and sistematically failed so I  
had to manually select growisofs for dvds.
