Suddenly after some update, audio in my laptop stopped working. I checked various devices in multimedia section in systemsettings but when I try audio, it says the device doesn't work. When I test digital, it doesn't show error but there's no audio either. I verified mixer settings and they seem proper. Audio works on other operating system though.

Reproducible: Always

Can someone help plz, I'm not able to use audio since a month now. :(
Comment 2 Ruchir Brahmbhatt 2010-02-01 03:03:10 UTC
I just restarted alsasound(which involved removing devices at the time of stopping) and then it started working. However there's still a bug I think. If I remove my ~/.kde4 folder, audio stops again. I have to restart alsasound service to get audio back.
Comment 3 Ruchir Brahmbhatt 2010-02-01 18:39:55 UTC
Further I noticed that I need to restart alsasound every time I login to get the audio back.

Same here with KDE 4.3.5 on openSUSE 11.2 for x86_64 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581376).
Comment 5 Ruchir Brahmbhatt 2010-02-19 21:14:31 UTC
Hmm, so I'm not alone facing this issue in opensuse 11.2. Does it seem downstream bug?
Comment 6 Vadym Krevs 2010-02-19 21:25:25 UTC
You are not alone :-(

Hard to say whether it is a downstream issue. I've just tried downgrading pulseaudio to the version shipped on openSUSE 11.2 DVDs (pulseaudio-0.9.19-2.3.x86_64), and now there is sound after login, though only via "OSS default output" instead of PulseAudio. rcalsasound restart makes no difference - pulseaudio remains dead.

Hmm, this may be related:

Is this still valid with KDE SC 4.4.2? Please also make sure you have no channel muted or at 0% in KMix
Comment 9 Ruchir Brahmbhatt 2010-04-06 08:59:29 UTC
I'm on 4.4.2 now and can't reproduce it anymore.
Comment 10 Vadym Krevs 2010-04-06 09:46:06 UTC
I have briefly switched to KDE 4.4.2 from openSUSE build service two weeks ago, and the issue was still present for me. Only "rcalsasound restart" after login brings sound back. I had since reverted back to KDE 4.3.5 due to a number of other regressions in KDE 4.4.2 as compared to KDE 4.3.5.
