Big images last usually several minutes to be loaded into the thumbnail view. During this time digiKam and the whole system (on single core hardware) is blocked.

I would like to have an option to disable thumbnail building for files bigger than an adjustable size and/or for files of a special mime type. E.g. GIMP XCF files last very long to be loaded. One could set 'xcf' to not be thumbnailed or set the file size limit to 30MB.

They should appear in the album - I want to tag them. But their thumbnail should not be built.
This might even be improved if the thumbnail of the equally named JPEG would be used e.g.
