Meh, if I create a 5000x4000 image, smudge, smudge, smudge -- no crash. I copy the background layer to a new layer, start smudging. Lots of horizontal artefacts. I try to move the layer -- std::bad_alloc exception. So there is a bug, but I didn't manage to reproduce yours! Seems to work. Created attachment 54089 [details]
