I add a few directories to Plasma's wallpaper Slideshow.  Suddenly, I get really low-quality copies of my photos popping up on the wallpaper.

Turns out Plasma is recursing through subdirectories of those I listed.  That's fine in some cases, but in others it causes a problem: specifically, I'm using imageindex, which generates downsampled versions of my files for indexing: "medium" and "thumbnail".

Potential fixes:

1) A flag saying "recurse" that I could check or not (good solution).

2) If several files have the same name, choose the largest (horrible kludge).

3) Ignore files smaller than a user-specified size (in pixels, not bytes, because a high-quality jpeg can be smaller than a low-quality tiff).

...?

Workaround: wallpaper dir containing links to all the files I want.  Does not update when I add new files to my gallery, adds complication, but otherwise works.

This recursive directory search is an awesome feature - please do not remove this!  Maybe this could be made more powerful by having both whitelists and blacklists of directories to use.

If Plasma could ignore hidden files/directories, you could simply hide all thumbnails. Actually up to KDE 4.2.2 it indeed ignored those (I had thumbnails from 2007 in there) But recently 4.3.2 it also evaluates hidden directories. I've no idea, why this was changed.

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.
