Is it possible to make the columns in the translation unit view user-selectable? It would be nice to being able to hide all columns but "Source" and "Target" and have them use the existing space properly.

You can set the width of a column there as in a standard way, with mouse e.g., so you can reach that effect to see what you would like to see only, I don't think it's worth to implement it in this way, but please fix me.
