For quite a while this particular bug in KDE 4 keeps me from doing the switch:

I am used to set bitmap fonts (first I had to re-enable them in fontconfig) as standard for KDE.
Antialiasing is still enabled, thus I get a sharply rendered Helvetica in all menus/texts/widgets and smoothed fonts in rendered web pages or office documents.

Normal applications are not affected, but e.g. the application launcher (Alt-F2) renders text now in unreadable white, and the text in the start menu as well. Seemingly only certain widgets are affected (I am not sure if it has something to do with plasma but could be).

HOW TO REPRODUCE:

start system settings -> appearance -> fonts
adjust all fonts -> select e.g. Helvetica -> apply -> check with Alt+F2, or lauch start menu

If you cannot select helvetica, you might need to enable bitmap fonts:
For ubuntu you need to replace this link
/etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf
by this link
/etc/fonts/conf.d/70-yes-bitmaps.conf
and run:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig

Now you can also select all installed bitmap fonts

Does anyone know of an work-around?


BTW: it is NOT an issue of the graphics card or desktop effects. Happens both with Intel and NVidia no matter if desktop effects are switched on or not!
