To me it looks like, this is solved (at least) in KMail 1.13.2 / KDE 4.4.2 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS). By right clicking column headers in folder window I can select the columns to be displayed. There can be selected "unread" and "total" number of messages. Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented. Thank you for your understanding.
