Because I use the "Check Mail" button much more often than the "New Message" button, I wanted to have this order in the toolbar:
Check Mail | New | ...
Therefore I removed the "New Message..." button from the kontact main toolbar. After restarting kontact the "new mail" button is gone.

This seems to be fixed in KDE 4.4.
