Quoting Ian Wadham:

"With a 1000 piece puzzle, the small size of pieces is a problem when searching for a piece.  If you view the whole table, it is very hard to see what is on each piece.  If you magnify the pieces, you scroll a lot and tend to lose track of where you are on the table."

I image a two-fold solution:

1. a magnifying glass for the puzzle table (similar to the functionality provided by KWin's magnifier effect)
2. zooming parts to some minimum scale when they are selected
