What I was doing when the application crashed:
Opened /home folder. highlighted 9 small video files, clicked edit -> cut, opened my storage partition (ntfs as I dual boot).  Dolphin froze, notification appeared but nothing happened and then Dolphin crashed.

- Does Dolphin crash in the same way if you repeat the steps you described ?
This is likely to be related to bug 208921.

I managed the video files 2nd time around but then the same thing happened with the picture folder. Tried the Dolphin split mode and worked in a fashion but was quite hesitant transferring the files over. Occasionally Dolphin has been slow or reluctant to do multi-file operations so I decided to turn off the notifications and it did seem to run smoother although without the notifications you can not tell when a file has finished transferring.

/offtopic . If you disable the Plasma file-transfer notifications, you should get an "old-style"(KDE3) dialogs showing the trasfer progress.
