Sentry Crash Report:

Description Alvaro Aguilera 2009-10-18 21:06:39 UTC
Version: 1.3 (using 4.3.1 (KDE 4.3.1) "release 178", KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop / openSUSE_11.1)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.31-41-desktop

(Somehow related to Bug 208625)

If I use Dolphin to access a folder containing several video files on a remote computer via SFTP, Dolphin goes crazy when I rename or mark multiple files. Each time you select a file, Dolphin tries to show me a video-preview of it, and in order to do that Dolphin starts to download the corresponding files.

This is _very_ undesirable. I don't want Dolphin to cause any network traffic. When using KIO-slaves, all that kind of things should be, IMHO, disabled.

I confirm this bug in KDE 4.3.3 (openSUSE 11.2 RC1). I experience this troubles when browse samba shares. Only when previews and tooltips are disabled, browsing shares with big video files is comfortable.
I suggest, option to disable any previews for remote files is needed.

I agree about this wish. It should be possible to disable thumbs on non-local file systems. Specially for video files which needs to be locally downloaded for the preview generation and this slows down the network speeed.

Moreover it could cause bug like bug #208625.

This is related with this:

Well... i don't know if is necessary a complete disabling of this feature. Maybe it could only stop the transfer when the item of the preview change.
Comment 5 Alvaro Aguilera 2010-02-10 15:58:11 UTC
This bug is still present in KDE 4.4.0
Comment 6 Peter Penz 2010-02-12 14:31:10 UTC
I agree that this must be fixed, but I could not get it into KDE SC 4.4.x. As string changes are required (the configure dialog must be adjusted), this must wait until KDE SC 4.5 :-( But it has a high priority on my list and will try to fix it ASAP.
Comment 7 FiNeX 2010-02-13 14:48:30 UTC
@Peter: could you add an initial "hidden config" in a setting file so, at least who reproduced the problem, cam temporary have a workaround?
Comment 8 Fabio Albieri 2010-03-11 16:19:24 UTC
I second Finex's request.
This thing makes KDE truly problematic on my netbook.
Comment 9 Fabio Albieri 2010-03-12 21:49:29 UTC
Also, trying to play a video over a samba share make kio_smb download it locally in /tmp. Very very bad
Comment 10 Peter Penz 2010-07-01 23:13:43 UTC
This has been fixed in KDE SC 4.5: It is possible to configure the maximum preview size for remote size independent from the local maximum size. The default value is that no previews for remote files get generated.

Thanks Peter!!! :-)
