Version: (using KDE 4.3.2)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

It would be very nice if KDM would/could preload some of the last selected desktop environment while you type in your password.
It should be possible to make a profile for the three largest desktop environments that defines which files should be cached from the disk before logging in.
If the files are already cached from the disk, the login process will be much faster. Proof: log into kde after a reboot, log out and log in again. The second login process is much faster since many of the executables are cached in RAM.

KDM is unmaintained and not used in KDE Plasma 5.

SDDM is the login manager used in KDE Plasma 5. If you still have this same issue with SDDM, please file an issue on the SDDM bugtracker (after doing a search for existing issues first!): https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/
