I remember having done something with Z sorting (e.g. package has lower Z than class) back in 1.5.x - somehow that seems to have got lost.

Are you refering to a visible representation of classes-inside-package similar to class widgets with class members displayed inside ?

Classes added to a package are shown in the tree view as hierachy. Dragging classes and the related package onto a class diagram show classes inside the package with a 'containment' association.
