What I was doing when the application crashed:
(I first submitted this bug as bug #208709, but the backtrace was about a KWin crash. That is related: on bug #208709, KWin crashed just after KMail/Kontact crash. My bug reproduces from time to time. Here is the Kontact backtrace...)

What I was doing when the application crashed:
From time to time, KMail fails to send a mail (maybe that is the fault of the
smtp server, I do not know). In that case, the mail window where I have created
the new email if grayed, apparently waiting for the email to be send. And it
lasts...
In the main window of KMail (which I use inside Kontact), i can temporarily
cancel the sending of the email (in the job queue). I can even "send the unsend
emails" (or something like that), and usually the sending of the email works,
that time.
But the original email window is still here, greyed. The only thing I can do is
to close it, using the close button of the KWin decoration. Then a popup, that asks if I want to cancel, save the unsend mail in drafts, or forget the unsend mail. As the mail is already send (remember: I manage to re-send it using File->Send unsend emails in KMail, I chose to forget it, and the window closes, but Kontact closes also and crash.

By the way, about the sending failure, what process should I strace/gdb, to see what happens with the sending queue? For IMAP, there is those processes kio_imap4, but for SMTP, what process does the job?

On another machine:
  Linux 2.6.30.8-64.fc11.x86_64 x86_64
with the exact same versions of KDE/kdepim/qt (but the x86_64 versions), I have also that bug. It does not create a backtrace, but the Kontact/Kmail window closes anyway, while I just was closing the mail window.

Thank you for your report. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained and the code has changed sufficiently in Kmail2 so the backtraces are not really useful anymore. Should you experience the same crash in Kmail 4.8.5 or later, please open a new report for Kmail2. Thank you for your understanding
