Sentry Crash Report:

Description Mathias Homann 2009-09-09 14:37:04 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

At some random point, kmail stops responding to keyboard input.

The strange thing is that this .. "ignorance" is only partial.

I can hit ctrl-n for "new message" but when i try to type the recipicients email adress the editor window ignores my keypresses.

I can hit "m" for "move mails" fine, and navigate the folder tree in the popup, but "enter" doesn't do anything.

After I restart kontact everything works fine.

This happens totally out of the blue, and even when kmail is in "ignore /dev/keyboard" mode any other app that takes keyboard input still does so.

Can it be that at this point in time there was some modal dialog window somewhere opened from kmail, e.g. on a different desktop so you didn't see it ?
Comment 2 Mathias Homann 2009-09-18 07:32:19 UTC
no, in that case all keyboard input would be ignored, not just most keyboard input (see initial description).
Comment 3 Martin Koller 2009-09-18 09:22:34 UTC
Not entirely correct. It depends on to which window the modal dialog is modal.
E.g. if there is a modal dialog open, which is modal to the composer, then kmails main window would still accept keyboard input.
And this is what I thought might be the case here.
Comment 4 Mathias Homann 2009-09-18 09:30:53 UTC
as far as i can see there are no modal dialog boxes around when it happens.
besides, its not as if one window completely ignores all keys, its one window ignoring MOST keys but NOT all.

hm it might be a kdelibs bug... seems that kopete exhibits a similar behaviour, but not as often.

Happens to me very often with kmail 1.13.5 (kde 4.4.5), so often that I cannot even type a mail without being interrupted several times.
It happens only in kmail, other apps are fine.
It started to happen some time ago, and not following a kde / kmail update, it was probably caused by an update of an external program.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
