Currently, Kopete does not have a systray icon (on my system, at least). It does minimize, but there is no way to restore it, except from Kickoff.

It was a Kubuntu-specific bug, sorry for not checking that earlier.

Got fixed today:

kubuntu-default-settings (1:9.10.18) karmic; urgency=low
  * Compress using LZMA
  * Set Konqueror's home URL to kubuntu.org
  * Show tray icons of Kopete and Konversation again
      + at this point we only agreed to add the indicator applet so that GNOME apps that would expect it, can nicely integrate into KDE
