Version:           1.2.1 (using 4.2.2 (KDE 4.2.2), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler:          cc
OS:                Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.28-14-generic

I can't anymore locate within Dolphin or the main menu-item FILE the routine to activate the function ARCHIVE for (de)compressing several files into one TAR.GZ-file .

My platform is a PC with dual AMD 64bit-processor and I am using Ubuntu 9.04 in the most recent updated-version.

Those actions are available on right click menu. Do you want to change this report to a WISH for requesting to add on the dolphin main menu?

I would appreciate ( I WISH) to find this function in the main FILE-MENU.

The menubar is disabled by default nowadays. Also, the Extract/Compress actions are a special kind of actions that are currently only loaded in the context menu.
