In KDE 4.2.3, Kopete used to open a message window upon a single click over the contact. KDE 4.3.0/Windows Kopete requires a doubleclick. 

Please return (as an option) single click functionality to open a chat window.

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
