There is a compatibility option available via Settings -> Tabs -> Show 'New Tab' and 'Close Tab' buttons in tab bar.

Thank you Robert, what version of Konsole are you on? I am using:
Konsole Version 2.3 Using KDE 4.2.98 (KDE 4.2.98 (KDE 4.3 RC3))

I do not have Settings -> Tabs.

Robert may have omitted a step. For me it is Settings->Edit Current Profile->Tabs.
