I think it would be very beneficial for the entire KDE desktop if fingerprint reading would be integrated, for example for unlocking the screen or the kwallet and so on. I guess the way to go about would be through a Solid backend that could handle fprintd [1] and possibly the binary blob from UPEK [2]. There is one other fingerprint reading tool on Linux that makes use of both fprintd, and BSAPI if the user chooses so, that might be of interest [3].

Last time I had a supported fingerprint reader, unlocking the screensaver worked via pam_fprint. Better integration in KDE would be nice (e.g. http://blog.djaara.net/wordpress/2009/04/23/kdm-and-locked-screensaver-with-fingerprint-plugin/), but AFAIK  isn't specifically required for unlocking the screen.
